Mardi Gras is the liveliest party on the planet, one last big celebration before everyone has to mind their manners during Lent. Of course no party is complete without drinks, and we have just the one to make this year’s carnival special.
King cake is a traditional Mardi Gras dessert famous for being topped with colored sugar. This drink recreates the fun of that classic dish with a grown-up twist. Laissez les bon temps rouler!
- 12 shot glasses
- 1 3/4 cups of lemonade
- 4 packets of plain gelatin
- 1 1/4 cups of cake-flavored vodka
- 2 teaspoons of sweetened condensed milk (or more for a sweeter taste)
- Decorating sugar in purple, yellow and green.
- Liquid food coloring in green, yellow and neon purple.
- 1 tube of vanilla frosting
- Edible silver sprinkles and candy (optional)
Dip the rim of each glass into the vanilla frosting, then cover 1/3 of the frosting in purple sugar, 1/3 in yellow and 1/3 in green.
In a saucepan, pour in the lemonade, then the gelatin. Let this mixture soak over low heat while you stir until the gelatin dissolves.
Take the mixture off of the element and whisk in the cake vodka and condensed milk.
Divide this mixture into three bowls (you should have about 1 cup in each bowl) then add 4 drops of the food coloring to make the 3 colors.
Add a tablespoon of the purple gelatin to each shot glass, then refrigerate for 20 minutes. The mixture should have the sticky, Jello consistency when you take it out of the fridge.
Add the yellow gelatin, refrigerate again, and finally top with the green gelatin. Keep the completed drinks in the fridge for at least 2 hours so everything sets.
Between each of the layers you can add some little edible sprinkles, or hide a gummy candy inside one layer for a fun surprise.
